Fair & Transparent Police Oversight

The Police Review Commission (PRC) is an independent civilian body that investigates complaints about the conduct of police officers. Our goal is fair, unbiased investigations that hold law enforcement accountable while strengthening public confidence in policing across Alberta.

Overview

About the PRC

Accountability in policing

The PRC is an independent, civilian-led agency established to address police complaints and ensure transparency and accountability. We handle serious and sensitive incidents, statutory offences, and police code of conduct violations. The PRC, which includes the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), investigates complaints thoroughly and decides appropriate actions, including disciplinary measures.

The PRC’s role and responsibilities

Investigate complaints

We investigate and resolve complaints made about police officers in Alberta, independently from any police service, using recognized standards for police oversight.

Public Reporting

The PRC publicly reports on cases to ensure clarity, transparency and fairness between the community and police.

Community engagement

To strengthen relationships between police and communities, we’re committed to ensuring that all voices, including Indigenous Peoples and racialized communities, are heard and respected.

Criminal investigations

As an arm of the PRC, ASIRT investigates criminal and statutory offences involving all police services in Alberta, including cases of death, serious injury and "serious or sensitive" allegations.

Legislation updates
